Multiple group identifications and identity compatibility in eating disorder recovery: A mixed methods study

Eating disorder recovery is an identity transition characterised by ambivalence, in which group memberships play important part. However, our understanding of how groups with different norms (i.e., supportive vs. unsupportive recovery) can facilitate or inhibit limited. To address this gap, study adopted the Social Identity Model Recovery to examine manifest through changing composition individual's memberships. We employed a convergent mixed methods design quantitatively determine whether specific family, friends, and online groups) are more helpful eating than others, qualitatively explore (in)compatibility shapes efforts. There was high level convergence across survey (N = 112) interview 12) data: could have positive negative impact according their norms; provided forms support identity-expression; incompatibility not always experienced as problem afford strategic benefits.
